Over three generations, the Aho-Soldan family has made a profound contribution to Finnish culture. Among his other works, Juhani Aho’s novel Juha has spawned four films and two operas, while his wife Venny Soldan-Brofeldt was one of Finland’s first female painters. Their sons Heikki Aho and Björn Soldan were pioneers of documentary filmmaking, and Heikki’s daughter Claire Aho used the springboard of the Aho & Soldan Company to become one of the country’s leading photographers.
A fascinatingly layered essay film that charts a century in Finnish history, Splinters uses the prism of the Aho-Soldans to explore concepts of time and memory, of national identity, and of the way the arts both reflect and enrich a society.

Splinters is a story about mental tensions and the electric field of ideas and practise that lead to the rise of modern Finland. The film moves between different eras - things are repeated, they evolve, they emerge in a new form. Half a century of history of Finland and Finnish culture, very versatile.

Peter von Baghin kiehtova elokuva kertoo monipuolisen taiteilijasuvun kautta suomalaisen taiteen tarinan. Elokuvan päähenkilöitä ovat kirjailija Juhani Aho, hänen vaimonsa taidemaalari Venny Soldan-Brofeldt, seuraavaa sukupolvea edustavat elokuvantekijät Heikki Aho ja Björn Soldan sekä Heikin tytär, valokuvaaja Claire Aho.
Juhani Aho loi suomalaisia enimmiN säväyttäneet ja kestävimmiksi kuviksi osoittautuneet tiivistykset siitä, miten perinteinen yhteisö alkaa muuttua. Venny Soldan-Brofeldt aukaisi ovia kulttuurieliitin maailmaan ja näki tulevaisuuteen.
1930-luvun Aho-Soldanin elokuvissa taas on tiivistynyt jälkipolville kuin unikuvana vuosikymmenen olemus, tosiseikkojen ja elämänharhan arvoituksellinen ykseys, aika jolloin Suomen kauaskantoinen unelma näytti saavuttavan täyttymyksen tasoja. Ajan kulkua seurataan
vielä finaalina Claire Ahon huimien
värivalokuvien johdatuksella 1950-ja 1960-luvuille asti.
